SMC KIDS LESSON CORNER | Jesus knew a thing or two about building houses

Jesus would often use stories called parables to teach the people an important life lesson. In this parable, he compared building a house with how we should build our lives. Jesus painted this picture: imagine building a house on solid rock. When a storm comes and the rains and wind start blowing hard, the house will stand because the house was built on a good foundation. But, if the house is built on sand and the same storm hits, the house will fall because the sand will just be washed away underneath it. If you’ve ever been to the beach, you’ve probably seen how quickly water wipes away your sandcastle. Sand is weak but the rock is strong. So, the life lesson was about having the right foundation. Jesus was saying that he is the rock and so is his word the Bible. Building our lives on those things will make us strong. When hard times come, we can survive it because Jesus will give us strength and the Bible will guide us. But, if we put our trust in worldly things like popularity or stuff, our lives will fall apart when hard times come. So kids, remember to build your lives on the rock which is Jesus and the Bible.

Key Points:

Jesus told a parable about building houses. Matthew 7:24-27

If you build a house on rock it will last a long time.

If you build a house on sand it will crumble away.

Wise kids build their lives on the Bible.

Memory Verse:

Matthew 7:24 Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock.

Talk About It:

What’s your favorite part of the video? What’s one thing you learned from it?

Describe the coolest thing you’ve ever built whether with legos, blocks or with sand on the beach.

Why is starting with a good foundation important when building a structure? What is likely to happen if you don’t start with a good base?

Why do you think Jesus used a house as an example for how to build or lives? What book provides the best foundation?

Read 1 Corinthians 3:10-11. This is Paul talking about his job as an apostle teaching the people about Jesus. What are some things we should be careful not to build our lives upon? Who is the only sure foundation for our lives?

How will you apply this lesson to your life this week?
